If the smell is more like the smell of vomit and not body odor, the
culprit could be that the ureathane coating is deteriorating. I have
noticed this smell in several older pieces of equipment shortly before I
began to notice the coating flaking off. This doesn't mean that you
will have to get a new pack, only that it isn't "waterproof" anymore
(like it ever was????)
Warm water and soap should do the trick, but you might notice flakes of
the coating in the rinse, and coming loose in your pack for a while.
You could then apply something like Kenyon ReCoat to help restore the
coating. Or you could use a DWR treatment to the outside to add a bit of
repellancy. In any event, I would still recommend the use of a
waterproof pack cover in the rain.
