Roy makes a good point.
When my going on 35 year old Berkley Trailwise (Colin Fletcher fans remember
those) pack bag started to delaminate the coating, I finally got tired of the
little flakes coming off one at a time so I put the thing into the top
loading washing machine, poured in the detergent, dialed up the heavy duty
cycle and turned it to hot and let 'er rip.
What did not come off in the wash certainly did in the dryer. I sprayed it
with Scotch Guard when it was dry and still to this day don't notice any
difference in waterproofness.
If it were not for better suspension systems on today's packs, I'd still be
using that packframe and bag. They last that long.
