I agree that it depends on the trek. But it also depends on the individual.
I do not carry long pants (except for rain pants), gloves, or stocking cap
except when I camp in the middle of winter. I have a 20 degree bag and
slept on top or with it unzipped at Philmont except for our 2nd night at
Copper Park when it was cold (last week of June 2001). Others that are more
cold natured would need to carry more. You should either know this from
your camping experience or figure it out during your shakedowns.

At Philmont, it is generally warm during the day and cools off when the sun
goes down. Several evenings our crew was in their fleece pullovers by the
time we were preparing dinner. Also you tend to crawl into the tent early,
so you can get warm in your sleeping bag. You are not exposed to long hours
of cold.

Bottom line, I consider a lightweight fleece required and anything over that
optional based on the individual. If you are going to be at any of the
higher camps, bring a sleeping bag that you are comfortable in at 25-30
degrees.
