Jason,
I couldn't agree with you more. After ten treks between 1967 and 2001, I did my first AA last year. I love doing the treks with program, but AA is the way to see Philmont at it's finest. A "bunch of really old guys" are going back during the week of Sept 7th. We hope to spend the week in the Baldy area exploring.
Last year we parked at the Cito turnaround and hiked into Cito for the first two nights. We did all the "usuals" around there like Hidden Valley, Window Rock, Hunting Lodge, etc. We went up to Cypher's Mine for two nights and side hiked Phillips. Imagine being at Cypher's for two days and not seeing another soul exept for your crew. We hiked back down to Clark's Fork for our last night, then back to the cars. Oh, and by the way, Calvin, we also had Dave Kopsa as our guide.
It was 5 days of beautiful weather, good friends and "God's Country". We had about 20 minutes of rain the first afternoon and it tried to spit some snow at us on top of Phillips, but it cleared up right away. I already have guys in our council asking if we plan to go again in 2004. Hmmm, that probably won't take much coaxing.
Everyone who loves Philmont should experience it in the fall at least once. Another contributor to this list (Mark from Ohio) went with us last year to see what the ranch was like before he led his first Council crew out there this summer. Our crew this year will have 5 veterans and 2 "newbies". We will have a combined total of 24 treks of experience!
We did take extra food, but it was cakes and biscuit mixes. It's great to have a hot cup of coffee and hot biscuits in the morning.
