[Philmont]: JUST Returned TODAY!!

From: Dewey Hemphill <dewrayh@yahoo.com>
Date: Thu Aug 07 2003 - 17:15:24 CDT

Our two crews returned to Memphis today from THE most glorious experience ever
in the backcountry of Philmont. For all but two (one 18 yr old youth/adult,
and one advisor when he was a scout 24 years ago), this was everyone else's
first trip to Philmont. Already we want to go back!!

One crew did trek 28 (S) and my crew did trek 32 (SS). As far as the guys at
Pueblano know I am the oldest Scouter (56 yrs, 9 mos, 14 days) to make it to
the top of the spar pole and "kiss" the carabiners. I hope to go back in two
years and break that record, too!

Thanks!!

 - to EVERYONE on this list for all your information, and advice,

 - to Coop and Wally for an outstanding advisor's guide to get me started,

 - and MOST ESPECIALLY to Jim Payne, Eagle Scout, the 2nd Scoutmaster of our
troop, a peer in age only, and a Scouter with more ribbons on his scout shirt
than a 5-star general, who I have long called The Master Scouter, for your
advice, council and mentoring getting this grey beard ready for the experience
of a life-time.

The ONLY "negative" thing I can say about the experience is I'm too old to
apply for a Ranger or backcountry position (my wonderful wife and two teens
notwithstanding).

Yours in Scouting.

IWTGBTP,
