I'm late to the posts regarding the spyware, but if you haven't tried it yet, try Pest Patrol at http://www.pestpatrol.com/ or http://www.pestscan.com/#

Even if you end up needing to reformat your drive to solve your current problem, you'll be surprised at the unwanted spyware taht will find its way to your computer.

After allowing my son to use my computer, we had literally hundreds of unwanted "pests" and spyware programs on my hard drive and Pest Patrol eliminated all.

I'm sold on its capabilities and regularly run checks to prevent repeat ocurrences.
