[Philmont]: Trek Food

With respect to finding, obtaining, providing etc foods suitable for
backpacking and cooking in the Philmont method, the possibilities are
endless! The resources that are out there in print and on the web boggle the
mind. The best place to start, as has been mentioned here, is checking out the
official Philmont menus posted at Seldon's site and on others. All of the food
is available in the grocery store. One thing we like to do is go to the outdoor
stores, see what the entree's are and then try and duplicate them. Many times
you may have to use a canned meat, or fresh cheese or do a little work with a
dehydrator, but it is fun. There are also numerous mail order sites that offer
value prices on the prepackaged outdoor meals. Search for any of the brand
names and they'll pop up. Your local scout shop has several books on meals for
camping and backpacking. When in doubt, eat what you do at home, but jazz it
up! Mac and Cheese is a no brainer, but how do you make it edible? We add
spices, or sausages, or onions, or tuna, or eat it just plain. Finally, the
sure fire way of solving your problem is to pass it off to a Scout who is
working on cooking or backpacking merit badges, and let them do the leg work!
