During my years as a sportswriter, I covered all manner of endurance sports,
including ultramarathons, triathlons and other distance events. At the 1988
U.S. Olympic Trials, I saw one our top milers collapse because of having
consumed too much water. He had consumed so much in preparation for the race
that he had depleted his electrolytes. Fortunately, medical help was near
and he was OK.

It can happen, but you really have to be drinking an awful lot of water. As
Dr. Kenneth Cooper, the father of aerobics, says: "Moderation and common
sense should rule the day." In short, you can overdo just about anything.

Jason, you're right. Know your body and know what you need. Regular training
-- not merely a crash campaign to get ready for Philmont -- will give you a
much better understanding of your personal requirements. You'll know when
your body is right and when something is wrong. It also will help keep you
fit so you can set a good example for your Scouts.
