The weight reduction advantage of a silicone-impregnated nylon tarp over
it's polyurethane-coated nylon counterpart is a no-brainer, but there are
probably disadvantages that are not immediately apparent. I've been looking
at getting a crew tarp for our shakedown hikes, and to avoid having to use
one of the expedition-weight Philmont tarps when we get there. Does anyone
have any experience with these pro or con?
Also, I've seen several references to crews using a 12' x 12' tarp, but the
largest size I'm seeing commonly available is 10' x 12'. Does the extra bit
of square footage make enough difference to warrant continuing my search?
Suggestions for sources? We'll have a full crew of 12 hikers.
