We took our own 10X12 silicon-impregnated tarp this summer and it worked
fine. Of course, we had no rain to speak of. Even so, we set up the dining
fly at each campsite and it covered all our gear nicely. We used two hiking
staves as poles. The savings in weight was welcomed by the young man
carrying the tarp. One of the Scouters in our troop uses an identical tarp
as his tent when we camp locally (not allowed, I don't believe, at
Philmont). Not sure how the silicon-impregnated tarps will hold up in harsh
weather, but they certainly worked great at Philmont. We picked ours up at
Galyans, which is an REI competitor. REI did not carry the product when I
went searching for it last spring.
