We used a 10 x 12 Ultralight silicone impregnated tarp from Campmor at
19 oz. (Item # 20070-E, $84.99) It worked great, although we didn't have
any heavy rain or hail, just daily showers. We used trekking poles for
support and devised a scheme for staking that only required 8 stakes-
one at each corner, one at each pole and by overlapping the cord, one at
the center of each side.
Using our own lightweight equipment and bringing the bare essentials
enabled us to keep all packs in the 33 to 44 pound range, most under 40.

Subject: [Philmont]: Silicone-nylon vs. polyurethane-nylon tarp
The weight reduction advantage of a silicone-impregnated nylon tarp over
it's polyurethane-coated nylon counterpart is a no-brainer, but there
are
probably disadvantages that are not immediately apparent. I've been
looking
at getting a crew tarp for our shakedown hikes, and to avoid having to
use
one of the expedition-weight Philmont tarps when we get there. Does
anyone
have any experience with these pro or con?
Also, I've seen several references to crews using a 12' x 12' tarp, but
the
largest size I'm seeing commonly available is 10' x 12'. Does the extra
bit
of square footage make enough difference to warrant continuing my
search?
Suggestions for sources? We'll have a full crew of 12 hikers.
