Our average pack weight was 38.5 pounds, range 33 to 44. We used all our
own gear except for bear bag ropes, a few bear bags (we carried 7) and
one pot. We were familiar with everything and check-in was a breeze. We
needed all the stuff for training hikes anyway.
By the way, I found an inexpensive outer bag for shipping packs. We
bought huge laundry bags from Sunny's at $8 each vs. zippered duffels at
about $30 each. The laundry bags were plain white so my son and I
decorated ours with colored Sharpies - Philmont related words and
graphics.

As long as your gear meets the minimum standards, and you don't run
afoul of any of the special Philmont edicts (e.g., no one man bivvies
for campers, etc.), you can bring literally everything on the Philmont
(mandatory) Crew equipment list (which the Ranger will have). They
(Philmont) will be only too happy to avoid the wear and tear on their
gear. Those Crews that make a serious effort to go light (< 40 pounds
average per trekker) or ultralight (< 30 pounds average) usually bring
most or all their own gear.
