RE: [Philmont]: Tent maintenance

Diane asked: "Does anyone know how to remove pine resin from tent fabric
without affecting the waterproofing? I've tried scraping, but it won't all come
off." ... and Ched added: "Leaving the pitch alone might also be an option,
although it will remain sticky for awhile before it finally crystallizes, at
which point those spots on the fabric will become weaker."

It may not be much help to you, but as I recall, any time I found myself with
pine resin on my phil-issue tent (usually the fly, since I always set it up) I
would toss a bit of dust/dirt on it (to prevent the stickiness) and leave it
alone. I suppose it either wore off (or dried up and flaked off), because 20
years later there is no sign of it and the fly is no worse for the wear.

The materials may be different, especially if it's on your tent rather than the
fly, but the worst case scenario I can see would be that you wind up having to
patch it.
