There also seems to be a LITTLE variation between base camp and the
back country. At logistics, the guy told us that they wouldn't allow
anyone wearing 'nylon' rainsuit pants or 'slicks' to ride because the
sound of the material rubbing on bushes etc may spook a horse. We
faithfully relayed this info along to our crew (who had been told that
a pair of rainsuit pants would be universally usable as 'long pants'
prior to that point in time) One of the crew took it gravely to heart
and spent $55 on a pair of Columbia/Philmont zip-offs to ensure he'd be
allowed to ride, several others just said they would for-go the horse
ride if that was the cost to them. When we arrived at Beubien, their
list of rules for riding had no reference to said rule and when the
staffer that checked us in went over the rules for riding, she didn't
make any mention of it being a problem to wear rainsuite pants. There
were many that rode in rainsuit pants during our crew's time slot.

Similar to this is spar pole climbing, the guy at logistics said no
rainsuit pants or jackets to climb spar poles but the guys at Crater
Lake said it was ok but you were taking a small risk in the way of
possible damage if you slipped on the pole.

I am by no way advocating that going against logistics stated rules is
proper or allowed, just noting that the rules seemed to be stated
differently at logistics and in the back country.

Just a couple thoughts.
