I have had good luck with denatured alcohol. It doesn't work as fast as
turpentine or petroleum solvents, but I haven't noticed any affect on
the the waterproofing either. I don't think I would use skin-so-soft,
especially on a tent I might use in bear country, because of the smell
issue.
