FWIW, the Garden of the Gods (Colorado Springs) horseback rides out of
Academy Stables uses a full horse gap between each horse. When I asked
them about it (indicating the Philmont protocol of "nose-to-derriere"),
the wranglers there (at Academy) indicated it resulted in fewer problems
with horses kicking and/or biting each other - situations where the
human riders tend to get hurt more than the horses.
Of course, the horse trails in and out of the GotG are considerably
easier than the "climb the ridge" trails at Philmont. I don't know if
that has anything to do with the horse lineup protocol.
I will say that I (at least) had more of the illusion that I was
actually controlling my horses at Academy versus at Philmont.
