RE: [Philmont]: Philmont edicts

Mark,

I'm not offering any alternative as I am not an experience wrangler and
do not profess to know the safety issues in dealing with horses. All of
my other experience riding was not in a group situation. My point is
that spending $55 for a pair of long pants to insure being able to ride
at Philmont seemed to be a poor value to me. I've done the rides on
both my treks and they would rank last on my list of favorite Philmont
activities. Just my opinion. If I make it back again and my crew goes
riding, I'll spend the time sitting somewhere enjoying some scenery
other than the back end of the horse in front of me.

I'm sure there are those that find the horse rides a great experience
and I'm glad the opportunity is there for them.

Phil,

what alternative method would you suggest that Philmont use for
horseback
rides when you are dealing with:

* Large groups of individuals.
* Narrow and uneven roads and trails.
* Striving to insure the health and safety of the individuals.
* " " " " " " horses.
* A far distance to the hospital, in case of injury.
* " " " vet, " "

Just curious as to what you would recommend, since I have been on two
Cavalcade (horseback treks) and numerous trail rides there and in other
parts of the Rockies.

They've ALL been like the method you describe.

Just curious.

I personally and several of our crew wore rain pants to ride at
Beaubien. I would hate to think I spent $55 for that boring ride. What
a terrible value. If I am fortunate enough to make a 3rd trek, they
will have to pay me to ride the Philmont nose to tail method.
