I would agree. Burro packing is an interesting experience and sounds like it will lighten your load, but it is very difficult to get the burros to move along, and it is very difficult to reach the next site in time to do the program there. Thus you usually lose two programs (one on each of the two days) in order to do the one. Certainly the view from Wilson Mesa is spectacular. When my troop went with 4 crews in 2000, our troop tee-shirts were a big hit with the staff. Beneath a drawing of a burro was the caption, "Burros, Just say no!"

The program at Philmont is the scenery.
The functions that are done at staff camp is a diversion. In my opinion, a trek should not be choosen because it does one program or another because you may not get an opportunity to do it because there is limited time.
Having said that, burro packing prevents the crew from hiking over Wilson Mesa. That is too high a price to pay. What I would do is to learn how to pack a burro but then decline the use of the burros.
