RE: [Philmont]: Burro Packing at Philmont

I have to agree with Wally that the program at Philmont is the scenery
for the adults, that is. When we asked the boys what the highlight of
their trek was, the most popular answer was playing Ultimate Frisbee
against the Dan Beard staff and winning. (Come on, you can play Frisbee
at home.) Climbing Baldy came in second. Our boys just wanted to play.

We passed on the burros largely due to advice from this list. Wilson
Mesa was beautiful! Although it was a hard sell to our crew leader, my
son, who wanted to hike the shorter route from Pueblano to Ponil so we
could get there earlier and challenge the staff to a game of Ultimate.
The other boys convinced him to go over the Mesa.

The program at Philmont is the scenery.

The functions that are done at staff camp is a diversion. In my
opinion, a trek should not be choosen because it does one program or
another because you may not get an opportunity to do it because there is
limited time.

Having said that, burro packing prevents the crew from hiking over
Wilson Mesa. That is too high a price to pay. What I would do is to
learn how to pack a burro but then decline the use of the burros.
