Our troop is looking at the possibility of getting an adult group together for an Autumn Adventure for the fall of 2005. I would be interested in hearing from others who have done an Autumn Adventure and the time period they chose- early, middle, late- September or October. Our group is interested in the fall colors, but not dealing with snow.
 Comment...
Time period for the colors (aspens turning gold) is early October. As you might imagine, that is also elevation dependent. In 2000 we arrived October 7, and did a program where we did a hike in the South along the Rayado and also moved by vehicle to the North and climbed Baldy. The colors were spectacular along the Rayado, but the leaves were almost completely down on Baldy.
Regarding snow, we encountered snow both that trip and in 2002, when we arrived September 14. Our guide in 2000 told us that after we departed it warmed up considerably, and the end of October was the warmest part of that two month period.
In your planning, be aware that there is a one-week blackout period (generally the first full week of October, though I believe it sometimes shifts into September) when the backcountry is closed to hikers for a hunting season.
