Catching up with old email after being gone to Philmont for the better part
of two weeks <g>, but I can tell you that the trading post we visited (PJ)
was well-stocked. In fact, in the top of the trashcan was the wrapper from
a brand new Thermarest that they sold there. After a few days on the
trail, someone obviously decided that they needed better comfort! I bet
they were glad they brought more than $20 (or borrowed it from
understanding trek-mates)?? YIS. Mike.

$20 should be more than enough. The Ponil Cantina sells Root Beer for 75
cents and refills are a quarter. There are also *limited* snacks
available,
such as peanuts and trail mix-type stuff. Trading Posts are available at
Ponil, Baldy, Ute Gulch and Phillips Junction and sell basically what you
mentioned below. One word of warning: One of our crew members had intended
to buy additional disposable cameras along the trail, but Baldy and Ute
Gulch were both out (Baldy had been waiting a week for their delivery). If
you really want something, bring it with you and don't plan on it being
avaialable in the backcounty.

Pholks,
Please tell me about Philmont's backcountry trading posts, and the Cantina
at Ponil.
I understand that the trading posts are located at same places as
commissaries; they sell film, batteries, postcards, stamps, replacement
items like tent stakes, etc; and food items are limited - trail mix but no
"junk food".
What is available at the Ponil Cantina, and what does it cost?
Would $20 for a Scout to take into the backcountry be an appropriate
amount?
