RE: [Philmont]: Physical Condition

I just finished trek 30. I turned 46 on the trail. I began at 275 lbs plus
in early November. I lost 65 lbs by the time we began the trek on 7-21.
diet and exercise. I'm 6ft tall.

Exercise began after losing the initial 35 lbs. I used the elliptical
machine at the local club because it is not a high impact machine. I used a
heart rate monitor to monitor rate. initially I went 25 minutes but
increased to 45 - 60 minutes at least 3 times a week. I played racquetball
and introduced a spinning class in March so that my exercise was 3 to 5
times a week except when we did shakedowns. In May, I began to do daily
sit-ups, v-ups and other exercises in the am after getting out of bed to
build the core muscles. In June, I began to add weight workouts to the
specific areas I wanted extra strength including legs, chest, shoulders and
back. I came back at 205 lbs. I handled trek 30 just fine and had a great
time.

Being prepared physically was very important for the good of the scouts that
made the trip. As you can imagine, it changed my wardrobe too! Being
prepared and being physically fit, in my view, sets a good example for the
scouts.

Thanks to all of you for your posts this past several months. I learned a
lot and benefited from the information, opinions and advice. My doctor and
wife are very pleased as are my kids who now believe that I'll be in good
shape for the years to come. Hopefully going back to Philmont again
someday.

With 2004 Philmont season drawing to an end. Would like to hear from adults,
especially those over 40, on how you prepared yourself for Philmont. Just
hiking with the scouts does not make it happen and some of you found out the
hard way.
