I am 46 yrs old and went on my first Trek to Philmont (701-Q1). I have
worked out my whole life but hurt my hamstring several years ago and have
not been able to run. This injury kept me from our trek two years ago. I
kept up my aerobic activity by using elliptic machines, swimming and biking.
For strength I have lifted weights for many years. Even so my weight crept
up to 218 (5-11 height). At the beginning of the year I started walking
with a backpack several times a week. Increased the weight to 75#'s and
hiked 3-4 miles 2 to 3 times a week. Also went to a massage to ease the
muscle pains in my hamstring. This made a big difference in my muscle
recovery. By the time I left for Philmont I was down to 208 and was very
confident in my hiking abilities. The wild card in all of my preps was the
altitude. It was not much of a problem but I could still feel it when I got
there but by the end even that was not a problem. I was no where close to
being the slowest but those kids can really move out compared to the old
men. The last day we went from Clark's Fork through Scheffer's Pass over
the Tooth of Time and into base camp (11.5 miles and lots of altitude
change) in 6 hours with a 45 minute break at the Tooth. Those scouts were
flying over the trial but the old men kept right up with them due to our
prior conditioning. It was absolutely gorgeous over the Tooth. I came into
base camp at 201 #'s and have kept the weight off by eating right and
working out!

Ps Thanks to all for the info gained from this list. It really helped and
our group was ready!

48 yrs. old, second Trek to Philmont. (2 yrs. ago).
We did approx. 80 miles w/ side hikes etc. including Baldy and over the
"Tooth" on our last day into Base Camp.
Stairmaster w/ my sons school back-pack full of 32 lbs. of books. Probably
not "ideal" but got the desired work-out. 5 times a week the last several
months plus my normal racquetball games. Not counting the altitude (West
Texas at 1600 ft.) I did o.k.
I do agree with those who say you can never work out enough.

With 2004 Philmont season drawing to an end. Would like to hear from adults,
especially those over 40, on how you prepared yourself for Philmont. Just
hiking with the scouts does not make it happen and some of you found out the
hard way.
