[Philmont]: Tips on planning for '06?

Mike's message got me to thinking about the upcoming 2006 reservation
lottery. Our trek this year was the result of obtaining a council slot after
years of failing to getting a reservation through the call-in lottery. We
had no idea at the time how many scouts would be interested (it was our
troop's first expedition), so we guessed. Came close, but had to do a lot of
diddling to get the numbers of interested scouts and available council slots
to match.

How do other units manage this process? Do you ask for commitments before
the lottery? Deposits? What do you do when a scout's plans or interest
change? For that matter, what is Philmont's usual payment schedule? (We made
six bi-monthly payments to our council beginning last June.) Does Philmont
allow any changes in crew number before the first payment is due?

In 98 & 00 we went with our Council. In 02 & 04 we were fortunate to get
Troop reservations. For our Troop reservations we had all of our crew
member's parents calling for reservations on the call in date. In 02 we had
a parent get a reservation with their cell phone while they were on vacation
in North Carolina. For the 04 reservation I told our group early on in our
planning that I thought our chances were very slim ( we had 38- four crews).
To my surprise, I am the one that got the reservation. In 00 I attempted to
get a troop reservation, but was high on the waiting list. So we then got
slots with our Council ( Philmont reservation is in the Fall and our Council
takes reservations in January). Of course the reservation process has been
changed, and is no longer a phone call system.

  My recommendations
  1. Attempt to get a troop reservation
  2. If not available- see if you can get a Council reservation
  3. If not available- encourage youth who are OA members to apply for OA
trail crew
  4. Check with Philmont about Autumn Adventure and their Winter programs
  5. And the new option the Double H
