Re: [Philmont]: Tips on planning for '06?/Pretty basic question

On the basic question...We have been able to add upon arrival at Philmont up
to the limit of 12. I doubt this has changed.

Planning...take your shot at the reservation system with you best guess as to
how many you will have. You can change, if you have to at a later point. I
would/did select all possible start dates. Philmont wants a deposit ($50)
after you receive the actual reservation. This is when you get money. See
above, you can add later. We try to replace people who drop out, but all know that
this is a NONREFUNDABLE payment. As I recall, Philmont will want 2 or 3
payments after that. This time we have broken those into smaller payments to us
to make it easier on the parents. Hope I answered all questions.

FYI...we also try to require the Scouts to pay 1/2. Seems to make it more
important. Be careful about replacing dropouts from outside of your own troop.
(Yes, I'm going to get flamed for this!!!) I said be careful, not don't do
it. We have done it half a dozen times and had probably 25% success, and 75%
problems. Can work well afterwards, though. We took one that cried every
evening for 7 days. We took care of him without babying. Was a Ranger 2 years
later!!!!! Didn't bring it up!!! Good luck.
