Re: [Philmont]: Pretty basic question

Mark, you asked about payment/crew number changes:

If we send in money for a crew of 9 when we pay in September, is it
possible
to add a member or two later, or are we restricted to 9 from then on?

>From what I was told, you can add on crew -up to the max of 12 with a max of
4 adults. Before our troop paid the first of the 2 payments to Philmont, we
had the advisors and scouts re-confirm their commitment to going. Actually ended
up letting one full crew reservation go back for those on the waiting list.
We had room in our crews to add on if others found they wanted/could go -
though our numbers didn't change again.

Helpful advice can always be obtained from Philmont. Betty and Fran answered
every question promptly (& patiently!)

>From our experience, though, I highly recommend starting out with 4 adults
per crew. If one finds he has to drop you still have 3 (the number recommended
by Philmont) and I think it is easier for the adults to coordinate and prepare
the crews; very difficult for the minimum 2 adults with day jobs to manage
training events, crew preparation & development in a busy troop. And you have no
wiggle room if something happens to an adult. Very stressful, I can personally
attest.

We also had an installment plan which began soon after we sent in our r
eservation money so that we would have the money to begin making the travel
arrangements once the first Philmont payment went out. Our objective was to have
everyone paid up by April/May when the final payments for travel/tour were due for
our July trek. Also to have funds available for group gear expenses, etc.

Hope this helps, Mark.

are all looking forward to hearing about their adventure!)
