MessageThere are several camps that are used as layover camps when crews
hike Baldy. They are:
a.. Copper Park..This is the only staging camp on the north side of the
mountain. It is a really nice camp, but the hike to the top is considerably
steeper than going up on the south side. While I've never come up this way,
I've been told it's about a two-hour hike to the top.
b.. Baldy Camp. This is the closest camp to the summit on the south side.
Amenities include purified water, showers, a trading post and a commissary.
When hiking Baldy from any of the trail camps below, you will pass through
Baldy Camp on your way to the top. Plan on a two- to three-hour hike to the
top from here.
c.. Ute Meadows.Ute Meadows is located about a half-hour south of Baldy
Camp and about a half-hour north of Miranda.
d.. Miranda. This camp is located a good hour or so south of Baldy Camp,
making it the furthest out of the staging camps. I've been told that as an
alternative to hiking up to Baldy Camp, you can hike via Black Horse Mine
and cut some distance off your hike to the summit.
e.. Ewells Park. This is one of the nicer trail camps on all of Philmont,
as the lower half of the meadow offers spectacular views of Baldy. The
spring can be difficult to find - it's back in the woods off the southwest
side of the meadow. It is about a 30-minute walk to Baldy Camp from here.

Subject: [Philmont]: Approaches to Baldy
2005 Crew 618-B will begin to look at possible treks in the next month, or
so. I want the boys to study the sectionals to get an idea about what it
will take to get in shape for our trek. I thought I would have them look at
the approaches to Baldy and Phillips. I was at Phillips in 2002 and I think
I have a handle on it. But I haven't been to Baldy since 1974. How many
camps hike Baldy and what are the pro and cons of each approach? That
should be an easy question ; )
