A quick check of my e-mail archive from 2001 indicates that they went over
#600 on the waiting list, because by the time they were contacted, most
crews had already made alternate arrangements, had already committed money
to those trips, and could not take the slots they were offered.
By the way, Florida Sea Base also has MANY opening for the summer of 2005 -
see http://www.bsaseabase.org/reservations/open-2005.html. It's not the
physical challenge of Philmont or Northern Tier, but it is a great program.

Back in 2001 someone on this list reported that #632 on the waiting list
had been contacted. However, Fran at Philmont later confirmed the final
number was #385, which is more in line with expectations, since 100-200
is normal in non-Jamboree years.
My gut feeling is that the switch to a lottery system will cause deeper
penetration into the list, as I suspect the lottery encourages application
by
units not 100% committed to attending Philmont. As a result I think
there will be more units rejecting trek opportunities. This could actually
hurt
Philmont participation, since most units will likely commit to other summer
activities instead of waiting for a call from Philmont. Only time willl
tell.
I agree with Al about checking out Sea Base. In the last 13 months I have
been to Sea Base, Northern Tier, and Philmont. Each one is a unique trip.
Your Scouts will have unforgettable memories at any of the National High
Adventure Bases.
