[Philmont]: Regarding the Alaska Alternative

Hi Pholks,

I had my one, and unfortunately possibly only, trip to Philmont in Aug of '02. Without a doubt, this was one of the highlights of my personal Scouting career with my Eagle Scout son. When the Philmont list was brought to my attention before our trip, I became a dedicated reader, and occasionally posted several questions myself. The information I gained on this list was invaluable to the planning of our trip. I especially enjoyed reading the trek summaries posted by returning crews as this gave me an excellent look into what I might expect. An now, two years later, I still follow this list very closely as I thoroughly enjoy reading various crew's accounts of their trek. It always brings back great memories.

About the only thing that I don't enjoy about the list is that, on occasion, people forget that this is a Scout environment and they are very concerned that someone's opinion they just read is stupid and that their own opinion is much better. The recent exchange between the former Philmont Ranger (regarding the Alaskan alternative) and the .357 guy's response is a good example. I will say no more about this other than the following request: would any and all who choose to post strongly opinionated comments on this list please remember that this is a Scouting environment? This would serve us all well if they followed the Scout Law and tempered their responses with a dash courtesy, kindness, and cheerfulness. Thank you from all of us who truly enjoy the list but do not like reading that type of exchange.
