"Yes, Alaska has bears. New York has muggers. Both can be potentially
deadly. Do we not take Scouts to New York because they could get mugger?
However, there are precautions to be taken against both to ensure a safe and
memorable experience."

Folks,

We New Yorkers really hate to be collateral damage. The "Mugger on every
corner "stories of New York are a thing of the distant past and we really do
get a bit miffed when we hear them.

Greater New York Councils runs a "Treks" program at its Ten Mile River Scout
Camp where you might encounter bears but are very, very, very unlikely to
ever see a mugger. You roll your own itinerary but it can include hiking,
biking and canoeing on the Delaware River.

In addition, GNYC has two camps in close proximity to New York City and they
are great places to stay if you want to see the sights and not spend a ton
on a hotel.

GNYC can be reached at 212 242-1100
