Based on my rather avid reading of the outdoor news these past 15 years
or so, it seems I recall far more instances of humans being killed in
the great outdoors by their fellow humans, versus black bears,
rattlesnakes, mountain lions, wolves, or other critters. I believe a
young couple was just found murdered in a remote park near San
Francisco. Without being facetious about it, you can be quite sure they
weren't trampled to death by a herd of mule deer. Though I have the
hairs on the back of my neck raise up a few times for no apparent reason
(a sensation I have learned to respect), I have never been openly
threatened by any wild animal - but I have had to face down my fellow
man in the woods on a number of occasions, including at Philmont. Not
that I would prefer looking into the business end of a grizzly up close
and personal, but it do sort of put things in perspective....
