RE: [Philmont]: RE: Philmont as Disneyland

We had a member of our '04 crew whose family couldn't decide what they would
do while he was at Philmont. First they thought cruise, then Disney World.
When the time came to leave for Philmont, his family decide to do both. On
the entire trip out from PA (thankfully by plane) and during our three days
driving around Colorado he complained about his family going to Disney while
he went hiking. To make a long story short, somewhere around day 5, after
climbing Trail Peak this kid sez: This is way better than Disney World
....

Couldn't help but reply. The "Disneyland" reference struck a chord. In
1993, as an adult, I went to Philmont thinking it WAS Disneyland. I cussed
and cursed my whole way through my trek. I wrote in my journal "If you ever
think of coming back to this place, read this...DON'T!!!" I had the wrong
expectation. I now have 6 treks (including that one) and will (hopefully in
2005) go back. No, it is not Disneyland. As the sing says, "Different
strokes for different folks." I LOVE Philmont. (Might do part of AT in
2006 with some old Philmonters.)
