Responses in no particular order:

First of all, I guess I'm now "The .357 Guy". Well, there worse things
I could be called, and they'd be more accurate!

For the person who thought the exchanges between Alex and I was
discourteous, I respectfully disagree. I've seen some discourteous
exchanges on the internet, and that was not one of them, in my opinion.
I made full recognition that Alex did not intend to offend, but that I
took exception to the implications in one of his observations. I was
not insulted by his comments and, in retrospect, should have used a
better adjective.

This is a board where we are allowed to express opinions and even to
disagree on techniques. I am mystified by anyone who would read
anything else into a difference of opinion. I think Alex' response was
measured, factual and entirely appropriate. In fact, I realize Alex and
I have the EXACT SAME opinion on High Adventure that if you read our
posts is clear: BSA should offer AGE APPROPRIATE High Adventure
activities where greater risks can be taken with people whose maturity
has risen to level commensurate with the risks.

Also, I wasn't talking just "bears". The difference between brown/black
bear behavior and grizzly bear behavior is significant. I was thinking
"grizzlies". They are very discourteous, especially if they are hungry.
Most of the Philmont rangers I talked to were VERY irritated that Ted
Turner is trying to reintroduce them into the habitat he owns that
conjoins with Philmont. It's not PC or Sierra-Clubbish, but I would
feel better, if I ran into a grizzly, if I had a .357 strapped to my
leg, I must admit. Actually, a .357 S&R Blackhawk with a cylinder
filled with 6 175-grain semi-jacketed hollow points, preferably cross
cut on the tips. Hopefully, I'd be able to leave it holstered, and the
bear and I would wave and go our separate ways, but "Be Prepared" is a
good motto. I know, I know, 5 is safer, yada-yada. Well, my finger is
my safety! jk jk lol.

Alex, you are right. Humor is often lost in the internet, and irony is
even tougher. That was the intent of my Ranger School analogy,
attempting to illustrate that all challenges are relative. I did put
the little "jk" wink thingy at the end of that one to try to convey the
irony. Sorry if it confused.
