RE: [Philmont] - Turkey bags & landfill

I fear that the jury will always be out on turkey bags and we will continue
to see the discussion in this forum year after year. I find that there are
plusses and minuses to each cooking/cleanup method. I will tell you that
after two treks using turkey bags, we would probably never go back to the
"Philmont way". We never dirtied a pot this past summer. We used turkey
bags for the main meal (usually a combo thing-you haven't lived until you
eat spaghetti with corn mixed in it or Hawaiian chicken with ramen noodles
in it <g>) and a supplemental ziploc for any mix-em desserts. The only
clean-up was the serving spoon and personal dishes done via the human sump
method. As another poster mentioned, this route freed up time normally
spent on KP duty to better uses (enjoying the sunset, socializing with
other Philmont'rs or just plain relaxing).

We re-use our bags, sometimes three times (1=noodles, 2=entree,
3=yum-yum). Then, once we get home, we take our own coffee mugs to The
Coffee Bean for a couple of months to make up the difference.

We just finished our trek, alternating between turkey bags and cooking in
the pot (depending on the cook and his preference). We ran out of turkey
bags at the end, and almost everyone lamented the fact.
