We actually had one problem that was not anticipated. Apparently, one of
our scouts over-waterproofed his boots and the moisture was not wicking out
of his socks. He rapidly developed a case of trench foot. Gold Bond (Extra
strength) and lots of barefoot during downtime resolved the problem after
about 3 days.

One of our Advisors brought Boudreaux too, but although everyone appreciated
the name, we only used it a couple of times. It was expensive, somewhat
smellable, and didn't work as well as old fashioned Gold Bond. In all
cases, chafing was taken care of within 24 hours by Gold Bond ointment and
Gold Bond Extra Strength Powder. Sometimes this was supplemented with use
of "wet wipes" with a little lanolin for chafing elsewhere.

This was the first time a few of our Crew (youth and adult) used Gold Bond.
It's menthol base was a real surprise: caused yelps and brief bow-legged
"gunfighter's walk" much to everyone's entertainment. But it knocked out
chafing on even our most tender skinned hikers.

We're an East Coast crew but only had a couple of minor nosebleeds, one from
a semi-chronic nosebleeder. The worst was at the Albuquerque hotel the
night before we hit Philmont. Taken care of by direct pressure on the
bridge of the nose and some cotton wadding.

Though we were armed with Wilderness First Aid Training and a very complete
first aid kit...Gold Bond, Advil, moleskin/athletic tape, and a StingEze pen
for mosquito bites took care of most of the problems we had. Incidentally,
kudos to SOLO Wilderness Medicine for an excellent two-day WFA course with a
lot of hands-on exercises. Strongly recommend it over the traditional "Call
9-1-1" oriented Red Cross Basic First Aid course.
