I'm of the belief that this is due to the reduced humidity, but
increased activity (breathing more)could also be a culprit.

Two of the last three kids to have nosebleeds in my unit at Philmont did
so on rainy, high humidity days near the beginning of the trek when we
got to around 9000 feet.. And after a suitable period of time applying
pressure they had no further nosebleeds on the treks. It appears to be
more of a change in atmospheric pressure than humidity.
