Fuel Load was exactly one of the reasons cited at the Advisors meeting for allowing campfires early this year. Another reason was the wetter than usual spring. Obviously fires were to in the fire ring only. It was nice to again have a small fire in-camp. Friendship and fellowship was alive and well.

Soil erosion from the burned area chokes the streams/rivers with silt,
killing many of the fish. The frequent flash floods also destroy nesting
formations making restock problematic until the erosion is controlled,
hence the conservation projects.
We helped move hat bales up the canyon wall north of IW last year near
Mountain Lion Canyon. I found the "talk" portion very enlightening. I
was amazed at the transformation from the north to the central as hiked
south last year. Not only with the obvious change from the burned out
trees to the lush green forest. But I was also amazed and a bit alarmed
at the amount of "fuel load" in the forests, especially around Webster's
Park. It's an accident waiting to happen.
It would almost make sense to allow campfires in those areas. Scouts
scouring the forest for campfire wood will pick the area clean! Just
look at the area around Sawmill camp where the scouts pick firewood for
stoking the boiler for showers. (In fact, I think the results at
Sawmill make it the least picturesque campsite we stayed at last year.
It reminded me of a public campground.)
