RE: [Philmont]: Reducing Fuel Load

We were also told by our ranger and at the advisor's meeting that we had
to spread out the ashes. We never built a fire as early in the trek we
were too busy. We got to Head of Dean and decided to build one that
night. The crew gathered firewood. Then, as our sister crew hiked in
they told us that they had talked to a ranger earlier and that a fire
ban was in effect. I think this was 7/8. So we never did build a fire.

For future reference...We have been told in the past that fire pits must
be emptied, and the ashes spread over a larger area. This year we were
told (both by our Ranger and Mark Anderson...even though we could not
have a fire!!!) that ashes had to be packed out the next day (insuring
the fire was out) and spread after a distance of one or more miles.
Just what we were told...
