A few further observations on Jamboree -

My first one since 1973 and I was very, very impressed. Staff gets a
huge tip of the hat for consistently superior activities and great
patience.

I saw a LOT of COURTEOUS behavior by Scouts and Scoters all week
(thanking bus drivers, thanking staffers, etc.) Of course, someone will
post that they saw a rude scout, but my overall impression was very
favorable in the courtesy department.

The heat was tough, but it also served as a great bonding factor for the
kids in my troop, anyway. The fellowship of shared suffering can be a
beautiful thing. I challenged my troop, at Roses, Thorns and Buds
before bed after the "Death March" to decide what the next week would be
for them. They could choose to take the body blow and go down and stay
down, or they could get up off the canvas and get back in the fight. We
were very pleased to see the boys happily head out of camp at 0815 the
next morning, attacking the day.

Many in my troop were Phil-vets. All of us believe this Jambo was
"like" Philmont, in the bonding/part-of-something-big-and-historic
sense. Our boys with pedometers logged over 75 miles through the course
of the event, so you definitely walk a lot (without packs, admittedly).

My younger son asked which I'd rather do: Go back to Philmont or
Jamboree. Philmont, I said. But Jambo would be a close second. I may
moderate that view after Sea Base next summer and Canoe Base after that!

For the Phil-listers I hoped to meet at Jambo: I was simply unaware of
how busy I would be as the Program ASM for my troop. I did loan out my
Philmont Brand to a staffer to "renew" her boots and I hope some others
got to use it as well. I hope you and your boys had a great time and
thanks to all the folks who worked staff, especially in Action Center A.

Dave
