This was MY first Jamboree and I was totally impressed with the whole
operation. My son (17 yr) had gone in 2001, didn't want to go again, and
was my resource of info as I packed and planned. The scoutmaster (veteran
of several Jambos) in my troop felt the entire operation was a little
"loose" since much of the military support of past years was
missing...........they were in Iraq.
Also, the Death March of July 27th could have been avoided. As someone
pointed out, decisions were probably made by high ups from the comfort of an
Air Conditioned office. Alot was learned of what NOT to do on that day.
The Alaska accident was only 5 troops away from my troop. Thankfully, my
troop was too busy setting up our campsite at that time and didn't see
anything. All we knew was the power was out at the subcamp HQ and that
there were sirens going off.
On a GOOD note -- Our boys accomplished ALOT of activities, earned alot of
the "rockers", really got into the patch trading "sickness", met lots of
scouts from all over the country, and really learned to work as a team.
They had a great time, which is the most important thing.
My favorite scout question..........."can we go camping as a troop sometime
again?"
