[Philmont]: Jambo Notes

Hi:

The Boy Scouts should again count their blessings that we have Philmont Scout Ranch and that it's a well funded operation. The site is incredible and worth a fortune.

So many of our Scout camps have been sold to developers. Since camping is the basis for most of the Scout program, we need to make sure we have good camping sites in the future.

During the jamboree this year there was quite a bit of discussion about moving the 2010 national jamboree somewhere besides Fort AP Hill in Caroline County Virginia.
But there are relatively few places in the US that can accommodate 45,000 + campers for a week. The 2010 jamboree will probably have in excess of 55,000 campers.

Most of the other jambo sites are not available and are now shopping malls, commercial centers or suburbs (Irvine Ranch in California, the Colorado Springs site, and the Valley Forge site). The only prior site that might still be available is Farragut State Park in Idaho, but that's an out of the way location for most folks.

When you return home from Philmont and / or the Jamboree, please help support your local Scout camp for those Scouts who can't afford to make the trek out of their home area.

Best regards,
Mick Meyer
