RE: RE: [Philmont]: ?The Burro Issue

Last year our crew selected Trek 32, and put off the then-optional decision
of "To Burro or Not To Burro" until a few weeks before departure. After
dinner on our last training trek, I spent about ten minutes discussing the
pros and cons of burro packing as objectively and neutrally as I could, and
read excerpts from many comments made on this list to give the boys a flavor
of the many reasons different crews made their choices as they did. They
were on the fence for awhile, and eventually voted in favor of burros.

The two important things to come out of the experience: first, it was THEIR
CHOICE, not mine, made for their own reasons. The process was an important
part of why and how the crew came together for this trek. Second, like
Gary's crew, the burros ended up being ranked up there with Baldy as the two
standout activities on the trek.

Thanks for the input, it's been an observation that I made from this list
that burros weren't the most fun thing on the list. I was sure there were
positive viewpoints, but until now, really none have come out. But today
there were a few. Trek 32 is high on my list, but starting out with
cantankerous mules was not. I also understood logistics forced you to take
them on particular paths. Were you guys required to follow a less than
optimal trail with your burro?

Joe,

Here's another recommendation FOR the burros. Our crew chose Trek 32
specifically because it had burros as a part of the experience.
<snip>
That being said the youth (this was an older, coed Venturing crew) ranked
the burro packing along with Baldy as the two most memorable episodes from
the trek. Their only complaint is that logistics lead them to believe that
we could get two burros and we only got one.
