I remember reading a long time ago about the Philmont burro in a small book
whose name I've long since forgotten. The theme of the book was that the
burro
is really a creature with many noble qualities that compare very favorably
to
many human "burros".
I believe the purpose of the burro at Philmont is to capture some of the
flavor of
the old west but also to teach the valuable experience of working with an
animal.
It might be useful to have a Philmont crew which will work with a burro read
the fine book "The Horse Whisperer". This is about a man who has the
ability
to "communicate" with horses.
As a young man I was moved by a book entitled "Ride Like an Indian". A rich
and
poor boy are in a summer camp with a horse race the last week of camp. The
rich kid has the expensive, fast horse with the expensive silver saddle.
The poor
kid has an older horse that doesn't seem to want to run anywhere. An old
indian at the
camp, though, takes the young kid aside and teaches him how to "communicate"
with
the older horse, which was trained by indians to be ridden bareback. The
day of the
big race the poor kid has learned how to communicate with his horse and his
horse
surprises everyone by running like lightning winning the race. How the boy
wins the
trust of his indian pony is a powerful and moving part of the story.
The great opportunity at Philmont is to learn how to become friends with
your burro.
Animals will respond to affection and kindness and will do their best to
help you in
return.
