There is a balance between integrity and practicality. When you are
in doubt about your final participation, pay deposits for the
minimum number of participants you expect to take. There is a
penalty for paying early for too many, but no penalty for paying
late.
For example, I provide deposits for 10 for each of my crews. Once
I'm sure I can fill them, I begin paying for 12.
This takes a little financial/time pressure off while you are
organizing.
