[Philmont]: 22 year old advisers'

Just a thought about young advisers at Philmont.

Last night a young man finished his last merit badge with me (and he
did his Eagle project last weekend), but he spent most of the evening
telling me about the Rayado Trek he had just completed at Philmont.
They did 170 miles and went up and down almost every mountain in
Philmont. For the most part Rayado crews do the entire trek without the
interference of adults (their rangers leave them) - and he had a blast.
He could tell me every mountain and every campsite - and even every meal
he ate. This from a young man who almost broke down as a boy on his
first Philmont trek four years ago. One night he isolated himself and
cried himself to sleep, and all I could do was sit and listen. One
reason he went back was to prove to himself he could do Philmont right,
and he did it without adults. He plans to go back as staff once he gets
on a college summer schedule.
