My older son went on his second trek as a 18 year old. He's always
said that that is the very best time to go. He got to do all the
things that the under 18 year old did, but he was also welcome at all
the advisors coffees! It was a special crew anyway, with his dad and
little brother there anyway, but he said he was treated great by the
Philmont staff - like someone who knew what they were doing.
That was probably because he was going into his freshman year of college
and the rest of the crew was going into their freshman year in high
school. The crew chief was going to be a sophomore, but he was a young
sophomore. When the crew chief became ill and had to be taken off the
trail, they elected to all take turns as crew chief instead of choosing
another one. My husband watched the younger boys go to my older son when
they needed help, probably far easier than they would have gone to one
of the 40+ guys!
Every member of that crew became an Eagle. Two went on to be Rangers at
Philmont. It was an excellent crew and they had a blast.
Think of your 18 and ups when you're filling out a crew, even if they've
been on Trek. Usually, those second-timers appreciate it much more and
can really be a blessing with a young crew.
