Expense wasn't an issue for us because when we don't use canisters
we use the drybags, so we already had them. Our troop takes an annual
canoe trip down the colorado River every spring, and we have a good
stock of drybags that are used for that trip.
As to size, I don't know if there is a measure, we just get the "large".
They are certainly heavier for carrying capacity than philbags.
However, since the meals have airholes, when they get rained on,
somethings do get wet (particularly the cracker boxes), and sometimes
our personal smellables (particularly shoes and clothing) don't get
ziploced. So using drybags helped keep things from picking up
heavy moisture that had to be carried.
The big advantage was that you can buckle them and carabiner them to
your pack, while the Philbags pretty much have to go into your pack
(you can tie and hang, but we had some come loose). ALso, when not
full of food, they can add extra protection from wetness to personal
gear (of course, there is the issue of placing personal gear into a
smellable bear bag).
Six large drybags would have been enough to handle a four day pickup
and smellables. We only brought four so we had to supplement with
Philbags.
Not sure I understand the extra time with food breakdown part.
Since one drybag holds about the same amount as one philbag,
nothing changed.

Don Roberts
