We've never had one of our dry bag buckles break. We've been using them for
years. I suppose, eventually, that will happen.
I don't see the difference in weight being all that important. We have
documented our troop having annual canoe trips down the Colorado river going
back at least to the 1960's. We've been using drybags for all of our
collective memory.

I suppose if that happened you'd just end up tying them like the philbags
are tied with the larkshead knot.

Whether new or better I can't answer. However, it definitely works for us.
We used both on the trek since we didn't bring enough dry bags (didn't know
the Philphood was soooo bulky, we brought enough drybags for six days food
on our Sierra backpacks). By the second half of the trek, the boys were
trying to stuff everything they could in the drybags and avoiding the
philbags except when there wasn't enough drybag capacity.
