Heavy sugar and starch and light carb? How can that be? I mean sugar and starch are both carbs.
Yes, PhilFood is heavy on carbs and a lot of it in the form of sugar. So is the diet of the average teenager. That's who hikes the trails of Philmont, so what's the problem? They should feel right at home.
Being an adult and diabetic, I had some concerns over the trail food. Philmont not only furnished me with the amounts of sugar and carbs, they also furnished me with a list of EVERY ingredient from the manufacturer for every food item. These are available free for the asking and are especially helpful for food and food additive allergies. They bend over backwards to help you.
And if this isn't enough, you can always "roll your own". Meaning bring your own food and they will deliver it on the trail to you.
So what's the complaint?
In reality, I found the trail food entirely adequate. I did take some of my own food to substitute for the high sugar content foods such as the breakfast, but found the lunch and supper foods completely compatable with what I needed in the way of low sugar.
As to protein, you could function perfectly healthy if the PhilFood was totally void of protein. I mean you are only there for ten days.
There is really no problem here, but if you perceive there to be or need some help, all you gotta do is call Philmont, they will work with you to satiate your needs whatever they may be.
If you still think the PhilFood was awful or inedible, then you just haven't attended enough campouts where Scouts work on their cooking requirements. Some of that qualifies as awful, PhilFood doesn't.
