I too think the food is NOT that BAD. Especially when you can buy for tune
ups you can read the past year's menu and see what you might need to bring
to supplement protein or carbs.

AND especially when I compare the food quality/quantity and cooking time of
the food issue in 2003 with my trek in 1999, it is MUCH better.

The food in 1999 had way too many sugar carbs. On both of my treks I took a
small amount of instant potatoes and minute rice, and some beef/chicken
instant broth. I knew I would NOT be eating 3 or 4 breakfasts of POP-Tarts
in 1999, and wanted some supplemental carbs. in 1999, I ate a little of the
rice or potatoes as we WAITED for dinner to cook (food was not the rehydrate
stuff like now). In 2003, I did not feel the need to supplement my meals
more than once or twice. The Carbs that year were not so much from Sugar.

In 2003 we had a Vegan scout who went. Philmont delivered his supplemental
food to our food pick ups.

I also found the Phil issue bear bags fine. I really like how fast the
scouts got at the knots for bear bags too. The Ziplock for personal gear is
a MUST to keep stuff dry. I personally find it hard to justify the weight
of carrying water bags, but it would keep everything dry. It is an idea I
had not heard of before.

BTW - welcome back Doug E., sounds like your troop had a really good time.
